During the 1930s, the Continental Baking Company introduced sliced Wonder Bread to the world. Once Americans overcame their initial suspicion, sliced bread became quite popular. By combining a slice of bread with inexpensive American cheese, economically-minded cooks created affordable main dishes. The U.S. Navy offered open-faced, broiled cheese sandwiches on their ships during the 1940s.
For those who prefer a gourmet cheese sandwich to a grilled cheese sandwich, you’ll love this recipe:
Gourmet Cheese Sandwich
3/4 pound cream cheese
1/2 cup minced scallions
Sliced raisin or cranberry walnut bread
8 thin slices smoked turkey breast
Fresh Basil leaves
Mix the cream cheese and scallions together. Lay out the 8 slices of bread and spread a little of the cream cheese mixture on each slice. Place a single layer of turkey on four of the slices. Cover the turkey with a single layer of basil leaves. Top with the other 4 slices of bread.
